When you realize the paint on your walls is puckling or that there is water damage in general. If you know the source it is best to call a plumber right away. You want to fix the problem to stop further damages that may occur. It is always best to call an expert and not to be handy in these situations as you may cause more damage than save a few bucks. Secondly, you want to turn all the power off in your home. This is most essential when the water damage is due to a flood. For smaller isolated leaks this is not a priority but if you have small children or won’t be home it is always safe just to turn off all power near the water damage. If you have stand- in water in your home turn off the power and call an electrician.

 

 

You always want to try and access the damage immediately after realizing the issue and getting help on the way. It Is very natural to clean up or try and help the damage by starting the process of remediating the water. The best thing you can do is document what has happened in full. Take as many photos as you can to show to your insurance for coverage reasons. After this is done you will want to check your valuables and secure them. If there is a roof leak and you keep all your family heirlooms in the attic; it may be best to move them or cover with thick plastics or something like a tarp for protection.
